Jewish sacred texts teach us that the world was created with both justice and mercy. Here in Maryland, children who are charged with certain crimes are sentenced as if they were adults. That is neither just nor merciful. Join JUFJ's youth justice working group as we discuss the campaign to pass the Youth Equity and Safety (YES) Act.
Join us at the Montgomery County Council building in Rockville for an important worksession on Bill 32-23, which would significantly weaken Montgomery County's Civilian Police Advisory Commission. It is crucial that we show up with our partners to let our Councilmembers know that we oppose any effort to roll back hard-fought police accountability measures.
Jewish tradition holds sacred both the value of work and the need to take time away from that work to care for ourselves and our families. Join the Maryland Time To Care Coalition meeting for updates and specific ways to take action to ensure the strongest implementation of paid family and medical leave across our state.
Sukkot is a holiday that reminds us to think about what it means to have a roof over our heads and a safe, stable place to live. Join JUFJ's Montgomery County housing team for an outdoor, in-person Sukkot dinner at B'nai Israel in Rockville. We invite you to bring your own dinner (no meat, please!) and nosh, learn, and socialize with us!

Since 2018, JUFJ has been part of the local movement to transform public safety in Montgomery County. Some of the core campaigns of this movement launched in 2020, including a focus on ending the practice of treating Montgomery County Public School students — especially Black and brown students — as criminals. To continue the organizing for decriminalization of young people in schools and drivers in traffic stops, the effort has been renamed as Decriminalize Montgomery County, and you’re invited to the launch party! Join Young People for Progress, JUFJ, and other advocates on Sunday, October 22 at 3:00 PM at Gene Lynch Urban Park in Silver Spring (8410 Colesville Rd) to learn about what we can do together to forge a path towards safer traffic enforcement, a fairer education system, and a community where all residents can live and thrive without criminalization.
This summer, the Montgomery County Office of Legislative Oversight (OLO) released an important and heartbreaking report on racial disparities in the school-to-prison pipeline in Montgomery County. Join JUFJ and our partners at Racial Justice NOW! and Young People for Progress to mobilize community presence at the Council Worksession where Dr. Elaine Bonner-Tompkins of the OLO will present the report and discuss its impact with the county council's Public Safety and Education & Culture Committees.
Come help us reach out to our JUFJ community about our upcoming Kickoff event as we head into the next legislative session! The more participants we have at this text bank, the more people we can reach. Everyone is welcome! We will provide a training at the start of the text bank for anyone who has not yet texted with us.
Join JUFJ and our partners for the final council session vote on Bill 32-23. As introduced, this bill would have significantly reduced the power of the Policing Advisory Commission to hold police accountable — but thanks to powerful organizing, the bill was voted out of committee without these harmful provisions. Mobilize with us to show the council we want the bill to pass out of full council without weakening amendments! We will meet at the Montgomery County Council Building at 1 PM ahead of the 1:30 PM full council session.

Join JUFJ and our partners at Racial Justice NOW! and Young People for Progress to mobilize community presence at the Public Safety Committee Worksession about juvenile justice in Montgomery County. This is an indoor, in-person action, for which we recommend wearing a high-quality mask. We will gather in person 30 minutes before the worksession, which starts at 9:30 AM.

We passed historic renter protection legislation in Montgomery County, and now it's time to make sure our county has the funds to implement it! Please join JUFJ and our partners in the movement for rent stabilization at the public hearing to fund the implementation of rent stabilization.

Effectively communicating about our issues to legislators is critical. Even more important than the facts and figures is sharing our stories and values. This storytelling training is valuable for anyone who is interested in telling a story at a Maryland legislator meeting or who is interested in writing testimony for any of our issues. This training is one hour and 15 minutes - let us know what shift you will attend when you register.
